BASF First Built Adjacent Battery Material Production And Recycling Center

2023/07/10

*The first advanced high-performance positive electrode active material production device in Germany has been completed
*New world-class Battery recycling device to produce black mass in Europe in a leading and sustainable way
*Proprietary production technology will significantly reduce the Carbon footprint of positive active materials

On June 29, BASF, together with customers, politicians and partners, unveiled the first adjacent battery material production and recycling center in Europe in Schwarzheide, Germany. The completion of this industry-leading high-performance positive active material (CAM) production device and the unveiling of the Battery recycling device used to produce black powder represent an important step in building a closed loop of the European battery value chain - collecting waste batteries and recycling metal raw materials for the production of new battery materials.

Europe takes an important step towards participating in the rapidly growing global battery market
Battery materials are the core of lithium-ion batteries. They largely determine the performance of batteries and play a crucial role in the electrification transformation.

Germany's first positive electrode active material production device
The new device is not only the first high-performance positive electrode active material production factory in Germany, but also the first fully automated large-scale positive electrode active material production facility in Europe. Currently, the device will provide customized products for European battery manufacturers and automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and all of its products will be sold out in the coming years. Based on BASF's proprietary and efficient production technology, including minimizing energy consumption and adopting a high proportion of renewable energy, BASF's innovative positive active materials will have a low Carbon footprint far below the industry benchmark.

Realize closed-loop of battery materials
BASF has provided recycled metal based cathode active materials as a closed-loop solution in Asia and North America to save resources and further reduce the Carbon footprint of its cathode materials. Through its investment in Schwarzheide, BASF can directly support the European market and help global businesses achieve faster growth. Scrapped batteries and waste from the battery production process are mechanically treated in the new recycling device to produce black powder (black powder). These "black powders" contain a large amount of important metals used in the production of positive electrode active materials: lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese. In the subsequent processing steps, these valuable metals are chemically recovered in a leading and sustainable manner and used to produce new positive electrode active materials. At present, this black powder production factory is under construction and is expected to start production in 2024.

Growth momentum of Schwarzheide base
The construction of these two devices will expand the product portfolio of BASF Schwarzheide base and create about 180 new jobs.
These investment projects have strengthened BASF's support for the European Commission to realize the European battery production value chain agenda, and are part of the European Common Interest Important Project (IPCEI) approved by the European Commission on December 9, 2019 in accordance with the EU country aid rules. The introduction of innovative battery materials and next-generation battery material research and process development, including Battery recycling, is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection according to the resolution of the Bundestag, and the Ministry of Economy, Labor and Energy of Brandenburg according to the resolution of the Landtag of Brandenburg, which is a part of the important project of batteries in the common interests of Europe.
