This new product is based on polypropylene (PP), an expandable flame retardant material with 30% glass fiber reinforcement, and can be used in various electric vehicle battery pack components, such as top covers, casings, and module partitions. Both grades have excellent thermal insulation, which helps to delay or inhibit the spread of Thermal runaway. In addition, compared with stamping sheet metal, the two materials have their own Thermal insulation and electrical insulation characteristics, which can provide greater design flexibility, reduce system costs, and achieve lightweight when applied to extrusion and Thermoforming processes. Compared with thermoplastic injection molding and thermosetting plastic compression molding processes that require expensive tools and equipment, extrusion and Thermoforming processes are not only more cost-effective but also more efficient in specific applications.
During simulation experiments in SABIC's own laboratory and actual production processes by customers, SABIC PP compound H1090 resin and STAMAX 30YH611 resin has been proven to have excellent mechanical properties and excellent fire safety, and can be applied to electric vehicle batteries with complex geometric shapes. These two materials can not only serve as new alternative solutions for sheet metal or thermosetting plastics in terminal applications, but also be used to create prototype designs to determine the feasibility of application in injection molding molds.
