ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) announced today that it has begun to build the first high-speed Hydrogen station in the Middle East. The Hydrogen station was built by ADNOC in Masdar City, and clean hydrogen will be generated from water using electrolytic cells powered by clean grid power.
Hydrogen does not generate carbon dioxide emissions when used and has the highest unit mass energy among all fuels. Compared with pure electric vehicles, it can extend the vehicle's range and shorten fuel replenishment time.
ADNOC also announced a partnership with Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) and Al Futtaim Motors to test the high-speed Hydrogen station with a batch of clean hydrogen powered vehicles.
Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Managing Director and Group CEO of ADNOC, stated: Reducing carbon emissions to address climate change is a clear and urgent need. ADNOC places sustainable development and decarbonization at the core of its strategy. While decarbonizing operations today, we are investing heavily to become the preferred supplier of clean energy in the future. Hydrogen will be a key fuel for energy transformation, contributing to large-scale economic decarbonization, and a natural extension of our core business. Through this pilot program, We will collect important data on the performance of hydrogen transportation technology to continue developing the hydrogen infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates.
According to this collaboration, Toyota and Al Futtai Motors will provide a batch of hydrogen powered vehicles. The UAE National Hydrogen Energy Strategy aims to rank the UAE among the largest hydrogen energy producing countries by 2031. The pilot plan will help ADNOC understand how to best use hydrogen energy from high-speed Hydrogen technologies technology for travel projects to support this national strategy.
After completion this year, the station will be operated by ADNOC Distribution. The second Hydrogen station is located in Golf City, Dubai, and will be equipped with a traditional hydrogenation system.
ADNOC has allocated USD15 billion (AED55 billion) to promote and accelerate low-carbon solutions, invest in new energy and decarbonization technologies, and aim to reduce carbon intensity by 25% by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
